Forex Account Management: MAM, PAMM, Fees and Broker Options

Giving someone permission to trade your money is a bigger decision than choosing a trading app. Before comparing returns, you need to know who holds your funds, who controls the trades and how you can end the arrangement.

Forex account management allows an authorized manager to place currency trades on your behalf under agreed permissions. Unlike forex trading signals, which you evaluate and execute yourself, this arrangement delegates trading decisions while leaving your capital exposed to market risk.

This guide explains managed forex accounts, common fees and investor controls, alongside relevant considerations for XM, IC Markets, IC Trading, Exness and Vantage.

How Does Forex Account Management Work?

Typically, an investor opens an account with a broker and grants a manager defined trading permissions. The manager places trades according to an agreed strategy, while the broker provides execution and account infrastructure.

The arrangement should document:

  • Who legally holds the account and funds.
  • Which instruments and strategies are permitted.
  • How trades and results are allocated.
  • What fees apply.
  • How withdrawals and termination work.

A broker and a forex trading account manager perform different roles. Assess each separately: access to a broker’s infrastructure does not prove a manager’s competence or authorization.

MAM vs PAMM vs Copy Trading

These terms describe different ways of organizing or replicating trading activity. They do not establish identical investor protections.

Structure

How it generally works

What to check

MAM

A multi-account manager allocates trades across client subaccounts.

Position sizing and account-specific controls.

PAMM

Trading results are allocated according to participation and contractual rules.

Allocation, settlement and withdrawal conditions.

Copy trading

An account replicates a selected strategy provider’s trades.

Copy settings, execution differences and stopping rules.

Some providers use these labels differently, so read the agreement rather than relying on the name.

For a fuller explanation of trade replication, our guide to what copy trading is provides background. Managed trading also differs from signals: the distinction between suggested trades and automatic execution is covered in forex signals vs copy trading.

Forex Account Management Fees Explained

There is no universal fee for forex account management services. Costs depend on the manager, strategy, broker and account agreement.

Trading and Management Charges

The total may include spreads, transaction commissions, overnight financing, management fees and performance fees. Currency conversion or withdrawal charges may also apply.

A low performance fee does not necessarily mean a low-cost service. Frequent trading and long holding periods can create additional expenses.

Performance Fees and High-Water Marks

Suppose a $10,000 account earns $800 after trading costs but before a 20% performance fee. If the fee applies to the entire gain, the manager receives $160, leaving $640 before other charges or taxes.

This is an illustrative calculation, not a typical fee quotation or return forecast.

A high-water mark generally links performance fees to gains above a previous account-value threshold, subject to the agreement. Ask how deposits, withdrawals and recovered losses affect that calculation.

How to Calculate Position Size Using the 3% Rule

A simple risk calculation is:

Risk amount = Account balance × Risk percentage

Position size can then be estimated using:

Position size = Risk amount ÷ Loss per unit at the stop-loss

In forex, the calculation normally considers stop-loss distance in pips and the pip value of the selected currency pair.

For example:

  • Account balance: $10,000
  • Selected risk: 1%
  • Risk amount: $100
  • Stop-loss distance: 50 pips
  • Required pip risk: $2 per pip

The trader needs a position size with an approximate pip value of $2. Our guide to forex lot sizes and position-size calculations explains how standard, mini and micro lots affect the result.

Calculations should also account for spreads, commissions, slippage and currency conversion. Actual losses can exceed the planned amount during gaps or fast-moving market conditions.

Can the 3-5-7 Rule Be Used in Forex and Gold Trading?

The framework can be adapted to forex, gold, stocks, indices and cryptocurrency because it is based on account percentages rather than one specific asset.

However, the position-size calculation changes between markets. Gold can experience rapid price movements around inflation data, central-bank announcements and major geopolitical events. A position that appears small may still carry significant monetary risk.

Gold traders can use an XAUUSD lot-size calculator to estimate position size from their account balance, chosen risk and stop-loss distance.

Forex traders should also consider leverage, pair volatility, spreads and correlated currency exposure. The same 3% limit can behave very differently on a quiet major pair and a volatile exotic pair.

How to Evaluate a Forex Account Manager

A polished dashboard and a profitable month tell you little about how a strategy behaves under pressure.

Examine Drawdown, Not Just Returns

Request a meaningful live history showing net returns, maximum drawdown, open positions and recovery periods. Ask whether performance can be independently verified.

A high win rate can hide occasional large losses. Check whether the manager increases position sizes after losses or holds losing trades while reporting only closed winners.

Understand the Strategy

Ask which markets the manager trades, how leverage is controlled and whether positions remain open through major announcements.

Several strategies can still create concentrated exposure if they trade the same currencies in similar directions. Familiarity with risk-management tools helps you assess those exposures.

Confirm Permissions and Exit Rights

Understand whether your authorization permits trading only or includes other account actions. Ask how to revoke it and what happens to open positions afterward.

Check withdrawal notice periods, settlement timing and possible charges. An exit process should be clear before you deposit.

Broker Options: What Our Five Partners Offer

Our forex broker comparison covers general account features. For managed trading, the narrower question is whether the relevant product is currently available through your specific entity and residence.

XM

XM has published a copy-trading offering involving strategy managers. Where available, this concerns trade replication rather than automatically constituting a traditional discretionary managed account.

Confirm regional access, strategy fees and investor controls before registering specifically for this purpose.

IC Markets

IC Partners documents MAM infrastructure for authorized trading subaccounts, master-account allocation and client reporting.

Investors should confirm the contracting entity, manager permissions and allocation method. Manager onboarding requirements are separate from individual investor deposit requirements.

IC Trading

IC Trading’s partner site contains MAM information, but the retrieved page displays that material with strikethrough formatting. Current availability therefore needs written confirmation.

Treat IC Trading separately from IC Markets. A regional marketing label does not establish authorization or product access.

Exness

Older articles may describe Exness as an active copy-trading option. However, the official Exness copy-trading notice reports that existing strategies and investments closed on 25 June 2026.

Do not assume a standard trading account provides access to a managed service.

Vantage

Vantage publishes PAMM information describing infrastructure for investors and money managers. Its PAMM overview is a starting point for checking the arrangement.

Confirm country eligibility, the contracting entity, allocation rules, manager charges and withdrawal conditions. Product infrastructure does not establish manager suitability.

Conclusion

Forex trading is a professional career that requires proper knowledge to start and stay profitable. It is the biggest financial market with many currency pairs, strategies, analysis methods, tools, and indicators.

Identifying the right opportunity at the right time requires impeccable market knowledge and significant time. Thus, a forex account management service is a great way for busy and novice traders to trade in currencies.

However, such facilities also have some limitations. So, conduct proper research and read terms and policies, legal requirements, reviews, and previous client records. Also, start with a small amount in the beginning and give preference to a reputable platform.

Here's a quick look at what you'll read

They carry market, leverage, manager and operational risks. Broker oversight does not guarantee investment performance or prevent losses.

Not automatically. Beginners still need to understand fees, drawdown, permissions and the possibility of losing their capital.

Conditions vary. Review notice periods, settlement rules, open-position treatment and termination requirements before agreeing.

There is no universal answer. Compare authorization, independently verifiable performance, risk controls, fees and compatibility with your circumstances.
